Club 100 has a very competitive racing fraternity in all major racing categories and is viewed by many as one of the top cycling clubs in South Africa. In 2007 alone, club members (not including our pro team) obtained 80 podium finishes in major races, plus we had provincial and SA champ medals in a number of categories.
We don’t have stringent entrance criteria and will welcome anyone who wants to race competitively in licensed categories. Our philosophy is rather to grow and build dedicated cyclists, although we do welcome competitive riders from competing clubs who find a home in us! For those riders that are competitive and make a positive contribution to the team and have proved themselves, we offer a sponsorship package.
Should you wish to come and race with us, we suggest you:
- Come to the races in club kit and introduce yourself to the team
- Attend our Saturday club rides at Megawatt Park
- Read the “Race Commission” section of the newsletter. Here we highlight upcoming races and events
- Attend our monthly race strategy and training talks, hosted by Nicholas White, the MTN pro team captain, at Entelect’s offices. Details of these will be released in newsletters and online events.
The more you participate with us, the more support we will give you, so we look forward to hearing from you. When you race with us, we expect the following commitment:
- Try and compete in at least one race a month (family permitting), ideally races where your full team will be present.
- Follow the race strategy decided by the team captain on the day – follow his/her judgement in these matters. Our captains are experienced and accomplished riders who have a lot of value to add and should not be second guessed in the race.
- Race as a team, not an individual. If a rider goes out on a limb for his/her fellow team mates, he/she earns the respect of others, who will reciprocate when the time is right. It is exhilarating making a positive contribution to a team win, even if you end up blowing halfway towing in a dangerous break for a fellow team mate and personally coming nowhere in the event. It is efforts like this that build a solid team, and allow riders to get to know each others’ strengths and weaknesses, which are the first steps towards building a successful team.
- The race team members must be commited to supporting the club and not to be seen elitist and being separate from the club.
For our teams, we endeavor to:
- Assist with race entries and pick-ups
- Have support vehicles at major races
- Provide race radios
- Provide racing kit
- Provide access to a mentor and coach who provides strategic and training inputs at a group level on a monthly basis.
- Have a hospitality tent/ gazebo at end of races
- Provide weekly recognition of results through the newsletter
- Host occasional training camps
The way we work, is that the racing commission works woth team captains who are tasked build racing teams, keep them informed and decide who gets sponsored. Please note that we rely on sponsors for financial assistance, and the teams are run by working individuals who freely devote their time to riders, so all riders’ assistance is welcomed.
