| Cross Country (XC) racing is a beast of a different kind..! When you have to race 6 laps around a technically demanding course while your heart is in your mouth, I can tell you - it makes for quite a challenge...The venue for the first round of the MTN Cross Country series was Rietvlei Farm just south of Johannesburg. At first glance the area didn’t look like the ideal setting for a mountain bike race, but once out on the course it was a different story all together. The course was a mixture of open jeep track, forested sections and some really rocky single track all laid out on a piece of land which barely contained any even terrain. |

Not only has this year seen the exciting development of Nycomed coming on board as a co-sponsor of the Academy, but we have also this year launched a Junior ladies team, comprising six talented cyclists who are fresh off a convincing win at the Emperors Classic, which victory follows the win they achieved at last week's Berg & Dale race! |

| To try to predict who will be the winner of Saturday’s MTN Barberton Ultra-marathon, is not an easy task. The saying about a certain Fat Lady who first has to sing before anything can be taken for granted comes to mind.
However, the one prediction that can be made with certainty, is that there will be drama in the Barberton mountains. Kevin Evans (MTN-Energade) and Burry Stander (Specialized/MR Price) are the two riders who will make sure of that.

The time trial route was relatively flat, while the road race had 3 climbs over the 2 to 2.5 laps, with some nasty drags and windy conditions – definitely a race of attrition. All of the top vets were there in their splendour for some really stiff competition. It was a little disappointing that there was no road closure and poorly marked and marshalled routes – one had to know the route backwards to make it to the finish, which was quite difficult as the race booklet was unreadable in places. Many cyclists are inclined to hang up their bike once the Argus is over, but there is great merit in keeping riding and maintaining your fitness through winter. All we had hoped to do is ride each day as best we could, racing was not on the agenda, we were thinking survival. That was until the prologue on day 1 when we missed 3rd place by less than a second! (And this was with Sarah’s wrist wrapped up after crashing the day before, which was quite painful on descents). |

| We have received several emails regarding last week's D Group ride. To quote Ed Latheron, "This was one of the worst D group rides I have ever been on. There was no discipline exercised by the cyclists, often bunching up to 5 people wide, people not keeping their position in the peleton when riding two a breast, cyclists continually riding up to the front of the peleton until it was 3 to 5 cyclists wide. How to fix this is a problem. A firm laying down of the rules and expected behavior before the start of the ride is all I can suggest." |

| A strong contingent of the new-look Club100 30-39 vets team riders turned up at the 30-34 race for the Pick n Pay Fast One Cycle race. The race started off at a brisk pace with Johan Pretorius and Christopher Dutton doing some covering work up front in early breakaway attempts. There were some initial attacks that were brought in. Since this was a flat race, which makes breakaways difficult, the strategy of the Club100 team was to hold back until about 15km to go and then start a series of phased attacks and breakaways according to each rider’s strengths. However at the 43km mark a dangerous breakaway formed that Jeffrey Kriel bridged across to, consisting of Anton Oberholzer (OB), Dave Labuschagne (Cycle Lab), Craig Harvey (Biogen), and another strong rider. The group worked well together for the next 10km until OB started his tricks! Apparently this time he entered elites but was late so he rode with the vets. This made the break only 4 men strong with OB catching a free ride.

The Mountiain2Mountain in Tzaneen held on Saturday 26th July is a 107km classic that includes the 9km Agatha climb out of Tzaneen and is then followed by fastish rolling terrain through the area. Big sponsorship resulted in great prize money on offer in all age categories. The race was well marked, very well organized, with cheap accommodation organized for all the out of town cyclists at the local Merensky High School.

| Those of you who spend quite a bit of time “online” might have noticed how over the past couple of weeks the internet/www has ground to a virtual standstill. Being a bit concerned the Nose dispatched his technical team to investigate. The report back was of grave concern as it appears there has been a huge increase in e-mail traffic around Gauteng, at times hogging all the available ADSL bandwidth and pushing most of the ISP servers to the brink of meltdown. |

| Morning rides:
The past week has been freezing and needed a great deal of motivation to make the transition from bed to saddle. Our weekly road rides had our polar watches confused as the temperature plummeted to below 0 on many occasions. Saturday we believe Club 100 had an official bed day as the morning Club ride was not so well supported. A pity as the temperature was a very pleasant 6+ deg and the rides went well with all having fun and a safe return. |

| The Walkerville Classic over 60km, generously sponsored by Medscheme, offers quite a few pluses. It is a short drive out of town, the countryside out there is really quite appealing and starting at 9 in mid-winter beats hands down venturing into the cold and dark. Cyclingnews' Wynand de Villiers promised Joburg's coldest and toughest mountain bike race and boy did he deliver. It was one of those mornings where you feel like a clown for pointing out the obvious (it’s cold, well done Einstein) but do it anyway. |

Out walking his chihuahua on Saturday he witnessed one of the more gratifying sights he’s seen in his long association with Club100 – a string of mountain bikers spread over a couple of hundred metres of Braamfontein Spruit trail. Why so special? Well closer inspection revealed that the bulk of the twenty plus cyclists were teens and sub-teens, the youngest being nine!
